Renovation of Skara Stadshotell

We have revamped and updated this

A hotel steeped in history

Skara Stadshotell an elegant and historic hotel located in the heart of downtown Skara. The hotel was built as far back as 1875, and over the years, students have danced here while royalty has dined in style in its grand ballrooms. The hotel has undergone renovations and expansions over the years and has hosted everything from music festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations to city races and revues.

Since we took over ownership of Skara Stadshotell 2020, we have carried out extensive renovations at the hotel. We have preserved its elegant, classic style while updating it with modern touches. Our goal has always been to do this in collaboration with the people of Skara, which is why we chose to work with local contractors on the renovation project.

Two years of renovation

During this long and extensive renovation period, we have focused on preserving as much as possible while also upgrading and modernizing the hotel. We have done everything from replacing the drop ceilings and repainting to purchasing new furnishings and installing ground fault circuit interrupters.

Some general updates we’ve made that apply to the entire building include the installation of a new, comprehensive fire alarm system. We’ve also installed a control and monitoring system for the HVAC, which will help make the property more energy-efficient. The network has been completely upgraded throughout the hotel, and there is a new security and access control system. We have updated the drainage system and installed sound systems throughout the property, except at Stay & Go. We have also implemented extensive fire safety measures in the building, such as installing new fire partitions and doors, putting up evacuation signs, sealing leaks, and ensuring that the ventilation system shuts off when the fire alarm is triggered.

Exterior updates

Even before you step inside Skara Stadshotell , you Stadshotell tell that things have changed. In addition to installing new lighting, putting up six new flagpoles, and sprucing things up with an old phone booth and fresh flowers, we’ve made many updates to the hotel’s exterior.

  • The parking lot has been upgraded. We have removed the asphalt and replaced it with pavers and granite slabs. We have also added two accessible parking spaces.
  • We have installed hydronic ground heating along the walkways to prevent patches of ice on cold days.
  • The entrance by the parking lot has been renovated. We have replaced the old panels with Corten steel.
  • In the courtyard, we have replaced the broken tiles and installed a new sound system.
  • We have painted and renovated all the windows and raised the railing on the balcony by the banquet hall.

A completely new ground floor

As soon as you step into Stadshotellet, you’ll be greeted by our completely renovated ground floor. Here, we’ve created what we call “Barception,” which combines a bar, reception, and café. You can come here to enjoy delicious food and drinks virtually any time of day. The ground floor also features new public restrooms, including an accessible restroom, and a luggage storage area. We’ve created an office for our hotel manager, installed a new ventilation system, and renovated both the cigar room and the quiet room. The old glass roof was replaced because it was leaking and has been replaced with three skylights. We have also repaired and reinforced the glulam beam that was attached to the glass roof. The floor joists in our coworking space have been replaced, and during the renovation we discovered an old iron pillar that we have exposed. The game room located one floor up has been updated with new flooring, a suspended ceiling, lighting, and walls.

Renovation of our hotel rooms

All of our rooms have undergone various updates and renovations. We’ve done everything from wallpapering, painting, and replacing windows to purchasing new furnishings and refinishing floors. We’ve improved ventilation, updated the electrical system, implemented fire safety measures, and replaced the lighting. Our more luxurious rooms have been completely renovated and designed by the architectural firm MOD, and in the near future we will replace the fire alarm system in Stay & Go and connect it to the rest of the hotel.

Renovations in the banquet hall

We’ve put a lot of love into our grand banquet hall. In our main hall, we’ve painted, updated the electrical wiring, renovated the doors, and installed new solid oak parquet flooring. In the smaller rooms next door, we’ve sanded the floors and repainted the walls and ceilings. We’ve installed a new sound system and purchased new furnishings.

Other renovations at the hotel

In the kitchen, we’ve installed a new fire suppression system in the hoods above the cooking range, fitted a new range hood over the dishwashers, and renovated our staff room. In the basement, we’ve repainted and installed a brand-new motion-activated lighting system that turns on automatically via motion sensors as soon as someone enters the room. We’ve updated the lobby by refreshing the old decor, replacing the lighting, and installing a new fire alarm. The conference room has also been spruced up with new blackout curtains and furnishings.

Future renovations

Of course, there are plans to continue developing the hotel. This spring, 10 charging stations for electric cars will be installed, and a gym will be built in the basement beneath Stay & Go. Our conference hall will undergo a refresh, including a new sound system, repainting of the walls, replacement of the lighting, renovation of the ventilation unit, and an upgrade of the technical equipment. Our goal is for Skara Stadshotell thrive for many years to come.

Interviews with some local entrepreneurs

Mats Magnusson

“I’ve probably been here 100 times for weddings and parties”

Mats Magnusson lives in Skara and has worked as a coordinator for the painters at Skara Stadshotell. He says the most enjoyable part has been working on the banquet hall. He has painted here many times over the years and thinks it’s wonderful that the old features have been preserved. He celebrated his 50th birthday in the banquet hall and says he’s probably been here 100 times for weddings and parties.

Mats has many memories of Skara Stadshotell. He learned to swim in the old public bathhouse, took his first brushstrokes at Stadshotellet in 1986, and has also managed the locker room for the handball club, which has contributed funds to the association.

“I get flashbacks whenever I walk past the old dance floor during the workday”

Electrician Magnus Fremst has been handling all the electrical work in the building since 1987 and really enjoyed carrying out yet another renovation. In October 2020, Magnus was the first on site and installed the outdoor lighting so that the hotel looked reasonably presentable from the outside. Magnus believes that Stadshotell Skara Stadshotell is extremely important for the entire Skara city center. He actually met his wife at the hotel’s disco in 1990 and says he gets flashbacks every day when he walks past the old dance floor during the renovation work.

“I used to work at Beijer Building Materials and met everyone from Skarab who came there to buy building supplies. Everyone was so nice that I applied for an internship.”

“This is the most challenging and most enjoyable job I’ve had in all my years as a floor installer.”

Jonas and Jocke from Golvtjänst AB have been responsible for all tile and clinker work, the floors in the hotel rooms, and all the carpeted areas in the hallways and stairwells. They feel that the biggest challenge has been navigating the space among all the other tradespeople working on the same areas. Both agree that the hotel renovation has been incredibly fun and challenging, and they believe that Skara Stadshotell a much-missed gathering place that most Skara residents used to frequent. Jonas says this is the most enjoyable job he’s had in his 34 years as a floor installer.

“Skara is set to get Sweden’s finest stadshotell

Joakim Sventoft is from Hjo and, together with the team at his company Sibab Interior AB, has been responsible for most of the hotel’s interior design. The biggest challenge for them in this project has been coordinating the scope and volume of the interior design within the specified delivery timeline. Joakim really appreciates that Jula had short decision-making processes and that the focus was on solid material choices and furnishings designed to last over time. As a result, Skara will have the finest city hotel in Sweden. He is very grateful for the positive atmosphere and the dialogue throughout the project, where everyone worked as a team to achieve this excellent result.
